Bank Street Reconstruction Committee Report - September 28, 2011
The Bank Street Reconstruction Committee met immediately after Labour Day to review the issues regarding the streetscaping of Bank Street that were still outstanding and to provide input into the Bank Street Reconstruction Advisory Committee (BRAC) discussions. The City held a public meeting on September 21, where the latest streetscaping design was on display, as well as examples of the art. The community was invited to comment. On Saturday September 24, the Bank St. Reconstruction Committee held a drop-in meeting where GCA and committee members were invited to look in more detail at the design boards and provide comments.
The BRAC continued to meet throughout the summer to discuss streetscaping and strategic issues of Bank Street design (bike lines, road design). In addition, site meetings with the construction project manager and the contractors continued to take place, to deal with immediate construction issues, including safety issues, detours, traffic, parking, and road crossing safety.
The construction and streetscaping work will continue until November 15th, when the road will be reopened for traffic for the winter months. The road will have a temporary surface. In the spring, the road will be completed, and streetscaping will be finished, with the planting of new trees and the installation of street art and furniture.
Recap of some key issues
Paving of Bank St. sidewalks: as residents will have seen,
the City agreed with the proposal put to the BRAC to do some special sidewalk treatment
to reinforce the sense of an ‘urban village’. The sidewalks are slightly wider.
Central Park belvedere and kiosk: this part of the Bank St. reconstruction project has been dropped
and is not proceeding.
Hydro poles: there is no change to existing hydro poles.
