Community Education Forum

The GCA's Community Education Forum, held last Thursday, November 4th, was a great success. Approximately 120 parents from many of the local schools participated in the event. We first heard from each of the school councils about the particular challenges faced by each of the schools (Glebe Collegiate, Glashan, Hopewell, Mutchmor, First Ave, Francojeunesse, Corpus Christi and Lady Evelyn) and we heard from Mike Carson of the Ottawa Carleton District School Board. People then participated in roundtable discussions on a variety of options to deal with the accommodation issues.

The GCA Education Committee is currently preparing a summary report of the discussions at the 11 tables, which will soon be available on this website. In the meantime, a number of people have asked that we post some of the information provided at the forum. We are happy to provide the following documents:

Christine McAllister, the chair of the GCA Education Committee, appeared before the OCDSB's Business Services Committee, along with representatives from First Avenue, Mutchmor and Glashan, on November 9th, to address the report on accommodation pressures in the Glebe, Old Ottawa South and Centretown. It looks like the School Board has a plan to research some short-term options for implementation in September 2011. Christine reported on some of the discussion from last week and encouraged the school board to also consider long-term options as well as provide the community with information about the accommodation review process.
Minutes from the OCDSB Business Services Committee, including comments made by GCA Education Chair Christine McAllister and others from the community and the Trustee's discussion of the report on accommodation pressures can be  found here.
