Traffic
The GCA Traffic Committee has been concerned with traffic and pedestrian safety affecting the Glebe since the first Glebe Traffic Plan was proposed and adopted in the early seventies. The Committee has been involved in numerous traffic and safety studies in recent years as well as in the consultations led by City staff on street reconstruction in the Glebe. With the Bank Street Rehabilitation project a few years ago, the Committee‘s focus also includes broad transportation issues.
A major concern for the Committee over this past year is the proposed redevelopment at Lansdowne Park. A transportation study (Delcan report) was presented by the Lansdowne developers to support the redevelopment. A thorough analysis by the Committee disputed the Delcan report by pointing out that traffic was actually growing on Bank Street and that putting more transit on Bank would not work as it is too congested. The proposed shopping complex would also increase traffic and create a gridlock on Bank while actually decreasing parking for sports events at Lansdowne. The Committee presented its conclusions at a joint meeting of the Transportation and Transit Committees and recommended that Council require an independent transportation study to assess the redevelopment project. Council did require a further transportation study and the Committee is awaiting the study conducted for analysis in the coming weeks.
The Committee also continued its effort to expand Central Park by greening the section of Clemow Avenue between Bank and Cobalt that has been closed off to vehicles for the last 40 years. City Staff’s assessment of this request has been very positive and the process for the expansion is well underway. The Committee has also participated in consultations on the proposed reconstruction of roads in the Glebe.
