Who is Ian?
Ian McKercher moved to the Glebe in 1969 to teach English at Glebe Collegiate. Except for a teaching foray to China in the early 1980s, he has lived and/or worked here ever since.
Ian is a founding member of the Glebe Historical Society. He currently has an archive of over 400 photographs, maps, files, books and articles on local history, and is constantly searching for more.
He is always happy to attempt to answer questions on Glebe history and is equally happy to learn anything you have to share about Glebe history.
Seeking Information
I recently received this message looking for information on the Mclaughlin brothers,
who ran a construction company that was involved in a number of projects in Ottawa many years ago.
I don't have anything on file, but perhaps one of our readers may know.
The question is:
My grandfather,( James Mclaughlin ) built the house at 38 Wilton Crescent
in the 1920's. My mother and her two sisters (Rita, Mary, Frances) were born
there in the late 20's. Jim Mclaughlin was the President of the Mclaughlin
Brothers Construction Company of Ottawa. They were involved in significant
projects in the Ottawa area including the construction of the Billings,
Cummings and Prince of Wales bridges. His wife Harriet Mclaughlin (nee
Quinney) was a member of the Ottawa West Liberal Womens Club.
If there is
any knowledge/information pertaining to the Mclaughlin brothers or the
family at that time, I'd be interested to know about it. My
grandparents were in this house until the early sixties and then moved
over to 349 Third Avenue until the mid seventies.
regards,
BL
