Miniature Train in the Glebe
I grew up in the Glebe in the 60's. I attended Corpus Christi Elementary then finished up at Glebe Collegiate in 1975. I remember going over to Muchmore before school and after class because they had better "bars" to swing upsidedown on! I remembered as a kid growing up on the corner of 5th Avenue and the Driveway, that there was a small pond on that side of the Rideau Canal. Around the pond for a very short while was a miniature train that operated in the summer. What became of that train? What year did I ride? I think about 1960 or 1961? (I was born in 1957). I also have photos of me standing on that weird octagon shaped concrete thing on the pathway, (sewer?) before they built the restaurant at the corner of 5th and the Driveway (across from the Lansdowne gates). My family were German immigrants who settled/bought homes on 5th Avenue in the early 50's.

Hi Margaret: Thanks for the interesting inquiry.
Unfortunately, I have no information about a miniature train that operated around the pond near the end of Fifth Avenue during the summers in the early 1960s. I have never seen a picture of it or any reference to it.
As the land is owned by the National Capital Commission, (NCC) they must have run the train or rented the space to a lessee. You might inquire of the NCC for further information. I'd be happy to hear what you find out.

P.S. I started teaching English at Glebe Collegiate in 1969 and would have been there when you were there.
